Last September 2-3, 2017, the Council of Deans and Department Chairpersons of Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CODDCCAS) Region V held a Conference and Enrichment Sessions on the New General Education Curriculum at the Ateneo de Naga University in Naga City. According to the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office V CHED Regional Memorandum number 82 series of 2017, the activity aims to “enrich approaches in teaching the new GE courses that the General Education teachers will be handling this SY 2018-2019.”
I and Marivic Fullante handled the sessions on “Mathematics in the Modern World.” (I lectured during the morning of September 3, 2017, and she lectured during the afternoon.) Here are the slides that I used: Introduction, Mathematics in Our World, Mathematical Language and Symbols, Problem Solving and Reasoning, and Geometric Designs.
I also talked about the teaching of mathematics using the Filipino language.

I recently presented a poster and a paper at the 7th ICMI-East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education (EARCOME 7) last May 11-15, 2015 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
Shown above is a picture of me with Frederick K. S. Leung (who was the honorary plenary lecturer) and Catherine P. Vistro-Yu (who was the international program committee chair).
The poster and the paper were based on parts of my dissertation with Dr. Vistro-Yu as my advisor. The poster had the title “Assessing Proportional Reasoning Skills and Understanding Using the Water Rectangle Task” and was co-authored with Dr. Vistro-Yu. (A copy of the poster is here. The poster is the one on top in the photograph above.)
The paper had the title “Teaching Proportional Reasoning Concepts and Procedures Using Repetition with Variation” and was co-authored with Dr. Vistro-Yu. (A copy of the slides is here. Also shown in the photograph above is the session chair Enriqueta Reston.)

Two stones with baybayin writing found in Rizal Elementary School in Ticao Island, Masbate have been attracting a lot of attention lately. (I got the picture of the larger stone from here.) Tito Genova Valiente, the officer-in-charge of the Institute of Bikol History and Culture at the Ateneo de Naga University, has written a few articles about them in the Business Mirror. I encourage you to read the one published in July 20, 2011 and the other published in February 11, 2012 to learn more about the stones.
The First Philippine Conference on the “Baybayin” Stones of Ticao, Masbate was held in Monreal, Masbate on August 5-6, 2011 (the conference proceedings can be found here), and the Second Batong Ticao/Ticao Stone Conference was held in Ateneo de Naga University last February 11, 2012.
