A few days ago, I got this Bagong Bayani Commemorative Coin in my change. It’s a 2014 Philippine five peso circulating coin created in honor of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). (Bagong Bayani is Filipino for “New Hero.”)
According to Numista, the obverse of the coin shows in small writing names of countries where Philippine workers are working (REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS UNITED STATES SAUDI ARABIA MALAYSIA UAE CANADA JAPAN AUSTRALIA QATAR UNITED KINGDOM MEXICO HONGKONG SINGAPORE KUWAIT TAIWAN JORDAN SOUTH KOREA GERMANY POLAND BAHRAIN FRANCE OMAN ISRAEL LEBANON LIBYA GUAM SWITZERLAND NORWAY BAGONG BAYANI).
Numista also says that the coin is “[h]onoring the Bagong Bayani Foundation, a non-stock, non-profit organization conceived to uphold the overseas Filipino workers. It works hand-in-hand with the POEA and OWWA in paying tribute to the OFWs through the Bagong Bayani Awards.”
