“But not too good”

Mark Saul, a teacher quoted in I Am a Teacher:  A Tribute to America’s Teachers by David Marshall Marquis and Robin Sachs (New York:  Simon and Schuster, 1990) comments on how teachers are not valued highly in America.  He says that American society wants teachers to “be good but not too good.  Otherwise they would have to pay them more.”
